Summer classes at The Village Haberdashery in West Hampstead

It’s summer at last! Why not make the most of the long days to learn a new skill in our bright and airy studio space in our West Hampstead shop! When the sun is shining we fling open the windows and it’s such a lovely place to be. We have classes to suit every level, interest and schedule.

Learn to Sew with Knit Fabrics with Charlotte Newland
Sunday, 1 July, 11:30pm – 4:30pm (£80)
Learn to sew with knits whilst working with the pattern of your choice! This is your chance to face your fears of sewing with knit fabrics head on with the help of our talented instructor. We’ll cover key skills for sewing with knits on a home sewing machine, from fitting to finishing, so you can leave with a finished garment and the confidence to keep sewing all the knit patterns you’ve been dying to try! Crochet an Amigurumi Cactus with Zoe Bateman
Sunday 19 August, 10:30am – 1.30pm

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. In this fun class you’ll learn the amigurumi method of crochet while making a crochet cactus! Everything is included in your class fee. Perfect for students who are comfortable with crochet basics and want to try a new technique! Find out more and sign up here.

Everlasting Rag Rug Bouquet with Elspeth Jackson
Saturday 21 July, 10am – 4pm (£75)

Learn to turn old rags into upcycled homeware with the beautiful craft of rag rugging! Our beginners’ workshops are designed to give you all the skills you need to be able to start any rag rug project for yourself at home. With plenty of help from our expert instructor throughout the day, you will learn how to use rag rug equipment, how to work with hessian, how to choose and prepare materials, how to design for rag rug, how to do the two different types of rag rugging (loopy and shaggy) and how to finish your work. In this workshop you’ll learn to use rag rugging techniques to create an everlasting rag rug bouquet to take home with you! Advanced Embroidery with Carina Envoldsen-Harris
Saturday 4 August, 10:30am – 1:30pm or Tuesday 7 August, 10am – 1pm (£40)

This class is designed for students who have mastered the basics of hand embroidery and would like to learn more advanced stitches! With the guidance of our talented teacher, you’ll learn spider web roses, pistil stitch, buttonhole heart, fishbone stitch and star stitch while you create a beautiful embroidered wreath design. Natural Dyeing Workshop with Rob Jones
Sunday 22 July, 10:30am – 4:30pm (£100)

Come and learn how to dye with indigo and natural dyes using Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing. Learn the basic binding techniques and then dye a series of samples using natural dyes and indigo. Over the 6-hour workshop you’ll master a variety of binding skills and learn all about indigo and how to dye with natural dyes. Find out more and sign up here.

Wednesday 4 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm or Tuesday 17 July, 10am – 1pm (£45)

This class will introduce aspiring stitchers – or those who need a refresher – how to use a sewing machine! In this comprehensive three hour class, you’ll get sewing machine-savvy and leave with enough knowledge and confidence to start making your own projects at home! This workshop is focussed solely on the skill of sewing and the entire three hours will be spent practising each element below to ensure that the methods stay in your mind after the class. Brush Lettering Workshop with Emma Block
Monday 2 July, 6.30pm – 9pm (£60)

Taught by illustrator Emma Block, this contemporary brush lettering workshop will focus on developing skills and learning techniques allowing you to grow in confidence and start to develop your own brush lettering style. We’ll start with exercises to practice making shapes, creating lines of different thicknesses and using different brushstrokes. You’ll then practice writing the alphabet, words and phrases with plenty of help and guidance on hand. You will be given a complete set of materials which you can take away after class, including guide sheets, a brush and a pot of indian ink. Plus you’ll learn how to photograph your brush lettering using just your phone to create a unique piece of digital artwork! Find out more and sign up here.

Modern calligraphy is perfect for all; its relaxed approach enhances your natural hand writing style to create a unique and beautiful lettering form that is totally individual. Led by Suzie Dicker, founder of luxury stationery brand A L’aise, this beginner’s workshop will guide you through making your first stroke to writing beautiful quotes that will be lovely enough to hang on your wall at home! Crochet Basket Workshop with Rachel Rogers
Saturday 7 July, 10am – 12:30pm (£40)

Learn to crochet while creating a fun and endlessly useful crochet basket out of recycled t-shirt yarn! This class will introduce you to the basics of crochet, how to follow a crochet pattern, how to change colours and how to finish a crochet project. All materials are included in the class fee. Freehand Machine Embroidery with Sophia Palmer
Saturday 14 July, 10:30am – 1:15pm or 2:30pm – 5:15pm (£45)

Do you want to learn a completely new and unique way of using your sewing machine? This workshop will give you a new expressive way to decorate and create. Mixing free motion thread sketching with fabric appliqué to create totally individual pieces of art! Fitting Masterclass with Charlotte Newland
Saturday 30 June, 10am – 5pm

This intensive one-day class is designed for students who know how to sew, but want to learn how to make a dress that fits beautifully. Working with the dress pattern of your choice, our experienced instructor will teach show you tips and techniques for taking accurate measurements, making a muslin, evaluating fit, basic pattern adjustments (blending between sizes, bust adjustments, lengthening/shortening) and altering your pattern. You’ll leave class with a finished muslin and a corrected pattern so you can make the dress of your dreams at home! Find out more and sign up here.

Embroidery for Beginners with Carina Envoldsen-Harris
Saturday 21 July, 2pm – 5pm (£40)

The class is a fun and colourful introduction to hand embroidery that is designed for beginners or those who want a refresher. You will start by learning the tools of the craft, how to use a hoop and how to transfer a pattern. Next, we’ll explore a selection of stitches – running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, French knots and more – by creating a sweet modern sampler designed by Carina. Beginners Shibori: Stitching and Binding with Rob Jones
Tuesday 17 July, 6:30pm – 9pm (£50)

In this class you will learn basic shibori stitching and binding techniques before dyeing your work in the indigo vat. Over the 2.5 hour workshop you’ll master the following stitching and binding skills and learn all about indigo, including: the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work; how to make the kumo (spiderweb), bai (seashell), and tesugi (stripes) patterns using binding; the three basic stitches – running stitch, ori nui (teeth) and maki nui (twist stitch); how to create filled shapes (maki-age) using stitching and binding; and how to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat! Modern Macrame Wall Hanging with Zoe Bateman
Wednesday 18 July, 6.30pm – 9pm (£45)

Macrame is a form of textile-making that uses knots rather than weaving or knitting. In this class you’ll learn macrame basics, including how to get started, the three most common macrame knots that are the basis for most macrame designs, how to use knots to create a pattern and how to customise or design your own pattern for future projects. Learn to Crochet Granny Squares with Annie Windley
Wednesday 11 July, 6.30pm – 8.30pm (£38)

Learn to crochet the classic granny square! In this two hour class, you’ll learn to create a granny square that can be used as a drinks coaster or as the start of a blanket, accessory or anything else you can dream up! We’ll cover basic crochet stitches, how to finish a square and how to connect squares to create larger projects plus how to follow a crochet pattern or chart. Guided Studio Time with Charlotte Newland
Monday 9 July or Monday 23 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£48)

Work on the sewing or quilting project of your choice with the expert guidance of 2016 Great British Sewing Bee winner Charlotte Newland! You’re welcome to bring a project at any stage of completion to receive personalised instruction. Classes are kept small so you’ll have plenty of one-on-one time. This class is for you if you: *Want Charlotte to hold your hand whilst you set sleeves, insert an invisible zip or tackle a fly front, *Feel frustrated that you can’t get your home-sewn garments to fit right and want to learn how to adjust a pattern for your body, *Are interested in trying out reverse appliqué, foundation paper piecing, improv or any other quilting technique, *Love the look of one of Charlotte’s classes, but the date doesn’t work for you, *Or just want to hand-stitch your quilt binding and eat cake whilst listening to Charlotte tell rude jokes! Crochet Granny Squares: Next Steps with Annie Windley
Tuesday 24 July, 10.30am – 12.30pm (£38)

If you know how to crochet a basic granny square, this intermediate class is perfect to take your crochet to the next level. In the first part of the two-hour lession, you will learn a number of different variations on the basic square: such as starting with a circular motif, adding clusters for texture, and incorporating 3-dimensional effects like petals to give your project design some added interest and texture. You’ll also learn the principles behind creating a granny square variation so that you’ll be able to design a granny square of your very own. In the second part of the lesson you’ll learn a number of different ways to join your finished squares together: invisible methods, sewn and crocheted ones, a way to join squares as you go and also some decorative finishes to add a whole new layer of interest to your finished project.
